The Baby Box Co. Guide To Safe Sleep
At The Baby Box Co., the safety of your child, and in particular, safe sleep is our mission. From the first night you’re together through baby’s first year, here’s what you need to know to create a safe sleep environment for your baby.
THE AAP Safe Sleep Guidelines
In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their recommendations for safe sleep and the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the sudden, unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year of age. We know this sounds scary, but by following these safe sleep tips, you can rest easy knowing that your baby will be safe and sound.
Here are the 6 safe sleep rules you need to know
1. Sleep in the same room (not the same bed!).
According to the AAP, infants should sleep in the same bedroom as their parents, but on a separate surface such as a baby box, bassinet or crib.
2. The mattress matters.
One of the reasons we advocate for the use of a baby box is that it comes with a firm mattress and a snug sheet, so you don’t have to worry about the risk of suffocation.
3. Keep your infant off of soft surfaces.
Never let put your infant to sleep on a couch, armchair or any other soft surface.
4. Always put them to sleep on their back.
Infants should be placed on their backs for both naps and overnight sleeping through 12 months old—no exceptions.
5. Learn how to swaddle.
Swaddling your baby not only makes them feel warm and safe, but it also prevents them from rolling over on their tummy in their sleep.
6. Avoid stuffed animals.
We know they’re cute and cuddly, but they’re not for your newborn. Yes, that even means the one that grandma gave you.
