The Baby Box Co. Guide To Safe Sleep In The United Kingdom
At The Baby Box Co., the safety of your child is our mission. From the first night you’re together through baby’s first year, here’s what you need to know to create a safe sleep environment for your baby. You’re probably wondering what a safe sleep environment looks like! Well, that’s exactly what The Baby Box Co. does. Our durable cardboard box meets applicable bassinet safety standards for the U.S., Canada, E.U. and U.K. and helps babies sleep safely when used in combination with safe sleep practices.
Keep reading for the sleep guidelines you should follow every time you put your baby to bed.
- Make sure nothing covers your baby’s head (e.g., headbands and hats).
- Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep.
- Make sure your Baby Box is always on a flat, solid, non-elevated surface.
- Do not place pillows, blankets or stuffed animals anywhere in your baby’s sleep area.
- Use a firm, safety-approved sleep space, such as a Baby Box.
- Babies who can roll themselves independently do not need to be repositioned if they roll onto their stomach during sleep.
- Room Share: A baby’s sleep area should be next to where his or her parents sleep.
- Keep baby away from direct heat sources such as radiators and underfloor heating.
A Dedicated Sleep Space Reduces the Risk of SIDS
The safest place for your baby to sleep is in their own dedicated sleep space such as a Baby Box in the same room with you for the first six months. Your baby should not sleep on a sofa or chair alone, with you or with anyone else.
If you do choose to have your baby in bed with you, please be aware of the specific risk factors that can make co-sleeping very dangerous and increase the risk of SIDS. Here are some of those risks:
- Always keep your baby’s environment smoke-free.
- If either you or your partner have smoked, drunk alcohol or taken drugs (including medications that may make you drowsy) you can put your infant at risk.
- You are extremely tired
- If your baby was born premature (37 weeks or less) they are at risk when it comes to co-sleeping.
- If your baby was born at a low weight (2.5kg or 51⁄2 lbs or less) they are at risk when it comes to co-sleeping.
