Baby Buggy's Fatherhood Initiative
In the United States, 1 out of every 4 children under age five lives in poverty. Forty-three percent of families living in poverty are headed by a single mother, which can contribute to their economic challenges. Children in father-absent homes are 54% more likely to be poorer than their dads, and they are twice as likely to repeat a grade in school.
Research has found that there are many low-income fathers for whom the stereotype of the “deadbeat dad” is simply not true. The overwhelming majority of unmarried fathers say that they want to help raise their child and are actively involved in providing support for the mother during the pregnancy (“Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study” Princeton University & Columbia University). However, financial problems can prevent them from contributing to their children's lives in a meaningful way, which in turn lowers their confidence in their competence as a father.
Since 2010 Baby Buggy has provided fathers who participate in their partner fatherhood programs in New York and Los Angeles with donations of clothing and goods that they need to keep their children safe and healthy. From May 2010 – December 2014, Baby Buggy distributed 338,060 items through 17 different programs to over 20,383 dads and their children.
Because of the support from sponsors and the Fatherhood Leadership Council, Baby Buggy is planning to scale up the program to serve more dads, create meaningful father-child experiences, and measure the impact of the program. Please visit their website to see how you can get involved!
