Dad Spotlight: Kurt Fuller

Posted on

With Father’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to put some fabulous dads in the spotlight! Kurt Fuller is so much more than the versatile actor we all know and love from Wayne’s World, The Pursuit of Happyness, Midnight in Paris, Psych, Supernatural, etc… He’s also an incredible dad and husband, married to author Jessica Hendra who we spotlighted back in 2013.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.

My wife and I have been married for 21 years and have 2 girls ages 14 and 17. My wife wanted me to mention that she’s much younger than I.

Has it been challenging having to travel so extensively for work with two daughters?

Yes! And more so as the years pass. I was on a plane from Toronto to L.A. when my first daughter was born; I'll always regret that.

Kurt may play a tough guy, but at home he’s a dedicated husband and father.

How have you balanced family life with your busy acting career?

As the kids have gotten involved with school and their own lives, it's not feasible to bring them on location. That's tough. On the other hand, when I'm not working, which is about half the time, I'm home 24/7, so hopefully it averages out. I'm grateful that my wife and kids have been so understanding of my crazy schedule.

Did you always know you wanted children?

I always knew I wanted love. Children just seemed a natural extension of our marriage. I was never desperate for children--you know how self-centered actors can be--but I can't imagine life without them!

Kurt, pictured above in Wayne’s World and Midnight in Paris, knows he’s lucky to have such a strong support network at home: “I’m grateful that my wife and kids have been so understanding of my crazy schedule.”

What was the best part about being a new dad for you?

Being on location while my wife dealt with everything! :) …I kid.

I'm an older dad, 40 when we had our first, and having babies was totally rejuvenating. My kids gave me a great opportunity to be playful and goofy and energetic at an age where I might've started taking afternoon naps.

What are some of the greatest challenges you have faced as a father?

Wow. I wasn’t prepared for the time commitment, the patience required and, most of all, the constant worry about keeping my kids safe.

How does it feel living with three women? Are you outvoted on everything?

Don't forget our 2 female dogs--that's 5 to 1! Yes, I am outvoted on nearly everything, but over the years I've come to understand that my wife is always right, so it doesn't bother me.

What are your greatest wishes for your children?

I want them to be proud of who they are, and I want them to respect themselves enough to make decisions that make their lives happy.
