Today, we are very excited to be spotlighting Amy Morrison of Pregnant Chicken, which is one of our absolute favorite pregnancy & parenting blogs! For those of you who aren't yet familiar with Pregnant Chicken, we highly recommend that you check it out -- not only is it a fantastic resource, but it's also laugh-out-loud funny.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from, when did you start your family, etc…?

I live in Toronto, Canada with my husband and our two little boys who were born in 2006 and 2008. I used to be a creative director in an advertising agency but left to go freelance just before I became pregnant with my first son. It kinda worked out well.

What are your new mom must-haves?

Well, the things that made my life easier when I had a newborn were a bouncy/vibrating chair, a bath chair (I could never handle the pressure of a wet infant), a good carrier like an Ergo, an iPhone loaded with music, and a freezer full of food.

What was the best part about being a new mom, for you?

I found the perspective on life helpful. Before I had children I would sweat the small stuff. Now that I have kids I see the bigger picture …. and pet the sweaty stuff.

What was the hardest part about being a new mom?

Just the overwhelming fear that something will happen to this little person that I love more than life itself. I was prepared for the love, but I wasn’t prepared for the crippling fear.

What is your most trusted resource?

Usually my friends, because most of them had kids a little before me so they are out of the trenches but not so long that they can’t remember.

Are there any key pieces of advice you would pass on to new moms?

Don’t try to do too much. You can get flooded with pressure of baby books, photo ops, sign language, music class, tummy time, socialization, carpet off-gasses, organic pureed sweet potatoes, sleep training, all while fitting back into your pre-pregnancy jeans. Just get through the day. The beginning is hard so conserve your energy and your sanity.
