C h a r i t y S p o t l i g h t : 5 W a y s T o H e l p
This Memorial Day weekend, we’ve decided to spotlight 5 charities that are truly making a difference. We hope that you will join us in remembering those who have lost their lives in service and honoring their sacrifices by supporting active soldiers and their families!
(1) Armed Services YMCA
Since the Civil War, the Armed services YMCA have provided comfort and aid to military children as they cope with the absence of a parent who has been deployed. Among the many charitable programs the YMCA offers, most are designed to help military children who are struggling socially or academically as a result of having a parent deployed overseas. The YMCA runs holiday gift drives and hosts summer camps nationwide for military children.
(2) Packages From Home
Started in 2007 by veterans from Carlsbad, this all-volunteer organization sends food and other comforts to troops stationed abroad. The website allows you to request a care package for a family or service member of your choice as well.
(3) Operation Homefront
Operation Homefront provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded soldiers when they return home. This group operates a variety of programs – vehicle donation, furniture, holiday, as well as assistance services, including food, financial, moving, housing, hurricane relief and scholarship programs.
(4) The USO (United Service Organizations)
The USO has operated since 1941, and though they aren’t part of the federal government, they provide entertainment, care packages, and recreation-based services to military members and their families. With 135 centers worldwide, this reputable organization has provided reliable support to the military for a long time.
(5) Wounded Warriors Family Support
Founded by retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel John Folsom in 2003, this organization helps the families of men and women who were wounded, injured, or killed during combat. They offer free retreats for wounded veterans and their families, with the goal of enabling them to reconnect and heal from the emotional and psychological impacts of war.
